Way back
when I became a believer, I would ask what I thought were deep spiritual
questions of fellow believers only to be rewarded with what I thought was the
most banal, boring answer: “Read your bible and pray!” Over the years I
discovered they were right! Now I am apt to handle difficult concerns with the
same response; though I do try to make it sound more interesting. If you
distill a lot of Christian advice it comes down to the same thing; “read your
bible and pray!”
“Gosh!” You may be thinking, “is that the sum total of intellectual consideration that is given to life’s perplexing conundrums?” When you boil it all down to the essentials… yes! I cannot think of any better solution to any of the issues we face.
Probably
the main problem attaching to the statement is that many Christians are yet to
discover the awesome power that lies within the simple concept expressed by the
rather bald statement: “Read your bible and pray.” We want it dressed up in
much more satisfying terms, try this for size: “Apply yourself assiduously to a
dialectic analysis of the covenants whilst exercising glossolalia in an
attitude of reverent submission.” There, does that feel better?
Here lies
the reason we are subjected to fruit and vegetables as young children: It is
good for us. No, not that your bible is green.. it can be a bit bitter at times
but such sweetness in the aftertaste as to make you actually want more. Prayer
can seem fruity in this worldly age but the long term benefits will put you way
ahead of whoever is second. We could say that “read your bible and pray” is the
healthy diet of those who grow up strong.
