The Law of Reciprocity

Success guru’s, Spirit Mediums, Life Coaches and even some Christians get excited about such ‘buzzy’ sounding titles that make their books and websites look informative. The (so called) ‘law of reciprocity’ simply means “what goes around comes around!” All good deeds are reciprocal. All of the world’s religions use this principle with great effect.

A person recently excitedly told me they had “done 3 good deeds then won $2000 in the lottery.” While I did share in their excitement and recognise their kindness, I cannot as a Christian make the connection between both events. I do accept though that it is valid for a non-Christian to make the connection. I have observed the principle of reaping and sowing working well for people whose lives are effectively under the Law.
As believers we are now called to walk by faith and not by sight. When we help or bless others we are making an eternal investment in the kingdom of God and have no reason to expect earthly results. Oh yes, by changing our motivation, we too can “have our reward” in this life if that is what we prefer.
Trusting God has much better long term dividends and is truly a “Blue Chip” investment. When we give expecting nothing in return we are in simple terms reflecting the Gospel.
